Attachment Styles and Psychological Distress Among University Students: The Mediating Role of Interpersonal Emotion Regulation

Abstract :
the presents study aimed to investigate the mediating role of interpersonal emotion regulation in the relationship between attachment styles and psychological distress in students. This was a fundamental study in terms of purpose, and a descriptive correlational study in terms of methodology. The statistical population consisted of students aged 18 to 25 at University of Birjand in the academic year 2024-2025. Out of this group, 432 individuals were selected using the convenience sampling method. The Collins and Read Attachment Styles Questionnaire (1990), the Hofmann et al. Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (2016), and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (2002) were used for data collection. The findings indicated that the anxious attachment style was a positive and significant predictor of psychological distress (P≤0.01, b=0.184), and the closeness style was a negative and significant predictor of it (P≤0.01, b=−0.275), while the dependence style had no significant effect on psychological distress (P≥0.05, b=−0.058). Furthermore, the dependence (P≤0.01, b=0.192), closeness (P≤0.01, b=0.248), and anxious (P≤0.01, b=0.389) styles were all positive predictors of interpersonal emotion regulation. The results of the structural equation modeling showed that the mediating role of interpersonal emotion regulation in the relationship between attachment styles and psychological distress was not significant (P≥0.05). Despite the limitations in sample and method, the research findings emphasize the importance of examining the dimensions of attachment in students' mental health and can serve as a basis for educational and counseling interventions aimed at strengthening secure attachment and improving psychological well-being.
