A Structural Model of Insecure Attachment Styles and Intolerance of Uncertainty with Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms: The Mediating Role of Experiential Avoidance

Abstract :

The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of experiential avoidance in the relationship between insecure attachment styles and intolerance of uncertainty with obsessive-compulsive symptoms in adolescents. This research employed a descriptive-correlational design. The statistical population included all junior and senior high school students in Karaj during the 2024–2025 academic year. A sample of 397 students was selected through multistage cluster random sampling. Data were collected using the Attachment Style Questionnaire (Hazan & Shaver, 1987), the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory (Foa et al., 2010), the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (Carleton et al., 2007), and the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (Bond et al., 2011). Correlation analysis and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used for data analysis. The results revealed significant correlations among all variables (p<0.01). Experiential avoidance partially and significantly mediated the relationships between insecure attachment styles and intolerance of uncertainty with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. The findings provide an integrated model for understanding how insecure attachment styles and intolerance of uncertainty contribute to the emergence and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in adolescents, highlighting the importance of experiential avoidance in this process. These results can be applied in the development of effective psychotherapeutic interventions for adolescents.
