Principiality of Existence and the Mentally-positedness of Quiddity as Viewed by ‘Allāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī

Abstract :
Since the Transcendent Philosophy is based on the principiality of existence, and most of its innovations stem from this principle, deep thought and precision in this regard play a fundamental role in a correct understanding of the system of the Transcendent Philosophy. Today, the teaching of Islamic philosophy in seminaries and universities begins with ‘Allāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s Bidāyat al-Ḥikmah and Nihāyat al-Ḥikmah. ‘Allāmah’s account of the principiality of existence and the mentally-positedness of quiddity is precise and innovative. Nevertheless, philosophy teachers do not have a uniform understanding and interpretation of the principiality of existence as presented by ‘Allāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī. Some believe that, according to Allāmah’s account, quiddity has no share in external reality and is merely a mental image that signifies existence. In contrast, another group argues that ‘Allāmah’s account does not entail denying quiddity a place in the realm of reality. Another group, however, by raising objections to ‘Allāmah’s explanation, believes that reality corresponds to both existence and quiddity. These disagreements have also led to ambiguity in the interpretation of principiality and mentally-positedness. By precisely explaining Allamah's interpretation of the principiality of existence and the mentally-positedness of quiddity, the present paper will firstly show that, from ‘Allāmah Ṭabāṭabā’ī’s perspective, the essence of reality belongs to existence, and quiddity – although it has a source of abstraction – has no external correlate. Secondly, the criticisms that some have leveled against ‘Allāmah’s interpretation, which have led them to believe that quiddity has a correlate in the realm of reality, suffer from certain problems. Among the achievements of this study, reference can be made to an accurate explanation of the meaning of principiality and mentally-positedness and demonstrating the important point that the absence of a correlate for quiddity is not equivalent to the absence of an origin of abstraction for it.
